    Just thought I'd share that while we wait for Corona to implement these (in my opinion) necessary changes, I went ahead and rolled my own "Timer 2.0" library that you can use to add this functionality to the timer library with one line of code. My unofficial library update is fully backwards-compatible with the existing official APIs, but adds a great deal more functionality. You can read about it and download the library's lua file here: http://www.jasonschroeder.com/2015/02/25/timer-2-0-library-for-corona-sdk/

    Trying to build more interest in this, so posting some details. Ideally this API would work identically to the current API for using the live camera feed as a texture fill on a display object (see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxMXOrCoMcI). So in code, it would look something like this:

    displayObject = display.newRect( 0, 0, 100, 100 )
    displayObject.fill = { type="video", src="foo.mp4" }
